ECHOES FROM CALVARY

Meditations on Franz Joseph Haydn’s

The Seven Last Words of Christ

edited by

Richard Young

In 1786 Franz Joseph Haydn wrote what he considered to be his greatest composition, The Seven Last Words of Christ.  Today it continues to provide musical and spiritual nourishment for millions through a format that links its seven main movements to spoken meditations on Jesus’ seven final utterances.

The Vermeer String Quartet, in dozens of performances of this Good Friday masterpiece throughout the world, has been joined by scores of speakers, including some of the most important religious figures of our time.  Here are meditations by more than sixty of them, in a collection that also includes in-depth essays that view this theme from various perspectives: Martin E. Marty (theological), Grover A. Zinn (historical), Jean Bethke Elshtain (ethical), and Richard Young (musical).

Two CDs are packaged with this book.  CD-1 is a complete performance of The Seven Last Words of Christ by the Vermeer Quartet – different from their Grammy-nominated recording from Alden Productions.  This version includes spoken introductions by Dick Staub, Addie L. Wyatt, Grover A. Zinn, John M. Buchanan, Jeremiah A. Wright Jr., John Shea, Jean Bethke Elshtain, Andrew M. Greeley, and Samuel Betances.  CD-2 consists of brief recorded examples which illustrate the section of the book entitled The Words and the Music – a detailed discussion by the Vermeer’s Richard Young of how Haydn’s music relates to the scripture texts that inspired it.

Besides offering many hours of spiritual reflection and devotion, this volume demonstrates how music – as an art, a craft, a science, and a metaphor – can provide the basis for challenging theological, philosophical, metaphysical, and ethical discourse.
