Vermeer String Quartet



                                         

A magnificent recording of the Good Friday masterpiece, presented in its original format, as envisioned by Haydn over two centuries ago. Nominated for a Grammy, this critically-acclaimed CD has been broadcast to more than 75 million people all over the world.

CD 1 [music & text]: Brief spoken meditations which preface each movement are delivered by some of the world's most renowned preachers and theologians. They include Dr. Martin Marty, Father Raymond Brown, Dr. Dallin Oaks, Rev. Kelly Clem, Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., Pastor T.L. Barrett, Father Virgil Elizondo, and the most famous evangelist of our time. Jason Robards presents the stirring introduction.

CD 2 [music only]: For those who prefer to hear the music without the spoken segments. This disc includes all the music, as the Vermeer observes each repeat specified by the composer.

 

 

A collection of more than 70 meditations written for the Vermeer Quartet’s many performances of The Seven Last Words of Christ.  Authors include Peter Gomes, Andrew Greeley, John Buchanan, Jeremiah Wright, Francis George, David Neff, Donald Parson, Joan Brown Campbell, Mark Noll, Niles Elliot Goldstein, John Shea, David Tracy, Gilbert Meilaender, Dick Staub, Donald Parson, Addie Wyatt, Rembert Weakland, John Ortberg, Demetri Kantzavelos, B Herbert Martin, Alison Boden, and others. 

 

Also included are special in-depth essays by theologian Martin Marty, historian Grover Zinn, ethicist Jean Bethke Elshtain, and the Vermeer’s Richard Young.   

Live performances and radio broadcasts are scheduled for this coming Easter season.
